Installing Linux (CentOS) on Vmware.

Installing Linux (CentOS) on Vmware.

There must be enough memory and a microprocessor with almost any distribution of Linux, the graphical environment will need at least 192 MB RAM, and 650-800 MB of hard disk space for installation minimal. To have the least amount of practical applications, it requires at least 800 MB of additional hard disk space, shared by at least 2 partitions. For text mode applications, 64MB RAM and a 100 MHz 80586 microprocessor will be sufficient.

  • Setting up VmWare for installing CentOS.

Memory, size of the HardDisk and location of images (iso files) for the Virtual Machine need to be specific. Other setting can also be setup, like hardware to be used on the virtual server.

On starting up Vmware the Virtual machine will boot the iso file based on the location specified in the setting .

(e.g c:\Users\ahmad\Desktop\LinuxISO\CentOS-5.2-i386-bin..)

A test can be run on the media to see if all files required for setup are good.

The Setup will start with the first Screen as below, we then press next to continue the setup.

We have the large variety of Languages that can be used (since Linux is OpenSource;  people around the world has contribute to run Linux in various Languages  ) The next screen allows us to choose a language.

Linux Partition

To install Linux we need two partition:

  • Root Partition (/)
  • Swap partition (maximum of 8 partition).

Swap partition is a portion of the hard drive that Linux make use of it as virtual memory when the system runs out of the physical memory. It is recommended that this partition is twice the size of the physical memory for better performance.

The next step will create the default partition needed to install Linux on the entire drive. Confirmation to continue with the setup which will erase the entire drive, create and format the partition for installation.

If ever we want to download any files from the internet for the installation or upgrade the system is a good idea to setup the network interface at this step, else this can be done after.

The next step is to choose the region, which is important for the time settings.

Assign a password to root. Must write twice to verify that it is consistent with what is expected.

The software and packages to be installed can be select from the next screen.

Customization also is possible for example when selecting Server bundle we do not have to install other packages that are required

And that is it….. you are good to go

If you have any problem please feel free to ask
